The Longa is the river that gives the Weißpriachtal much of its character: clear, cold mountain water moving from high alpine terrain through waterfalls and then into broad, naturally winding meanders.
Why go
Follow the river for an easy way into Lungau’s quieter side. The upper valley is about rushing water and waterfalls; farther down, the Longa slows into loops through meadows and protected wetland habitat. It works as a destination in its own right and as the thread connecting hikes toward Wirpitschsee and the huts of the Weißpriachtal.
Good to know
- The river is also written Lonka.
- From its origin to its mouth in the Taurach, the Longa runs for roughly 20 km.
- The protected “Lonka Mäander” areas are related protected sections along the river, not the identity of the river itself.
- The water remains alpine-cold even in summer; use normal mountain-river caution around swimming spots and faster current.
