Places on this itinerary

This is the hike to pick when you want a real mountain hut without a big mountain effort: Prebersee’s quiet water at the bottom, an hour of honest climbing through pastures, and the 130-year-old Grazer Hütte with food and a panorama at the top.

Why this hike works for families

The climb is short enough that nobody has to be talked into it. Park in one of the small bays along the road just past Prebersee and the trail gains its height gently, first in forest, then across open alpine pastures where the Schladming Tauern ridgeline opens up ahead. From our hike, the round trip was a comfortable couple of hours of walking at family pace — the kind of outing where the hut stop, not the effort, is what everyone remembers.

Starting at the lake itself works too and adds the pretty first stretch along the shore; allow about 1¾ hours up from there.

The hut reward

The Grazer Hütte has stood at 1,897 m since 1894, built by the Graz section of the Alpine Club, and Heinrich Harrer managed it in the early 1930s. It serves warm food daily in season, roughly 11:00 to 16:00. From our visit, the cold Murauer Radler on the red-checked terrace tables was the perfect summit substitute. The carved marmot at the door is the obligatory family photo.

Good to know

  • The hut season runs roughly from late May to mid-October; check current opening dates before you go.
  • Make it a fair-weather day: the pastures are open and offer little shelter in a thunderstorm.
  • Proper shoes and water for everyone, even with a food stop planned — this is an easy trail but a real mountain walk, not a stroller outing.
  • The hut sits just across the Styrian border; the approach and parking are on the Lungau side at Prebersee.
  • Strong hikers can continue from the hut toward the Preber summit (2,740 m), which turns the half-day into a serious full-day tour.

The linked Garmin activity is retained as supporting route evidence; trail conditions, parking and hut opening information should still be checked for the day of the hike.
